Modern ABAP Foundations Sprint

A hands-on sprint for developers who are fluent in classic ABAP but haven't shipped modern code. Three days rebuild the foundations S/4HANA assumes: the Clean Core rules of the road, the HANA database mindset, the modern language, and a working first contact with CDS and RAP — every block paired with live, code-checked exercises.
Duration

3 days

Cohort

Up to 12 developers for genuine hands-on attention.

Delivery

On-site, virtual or hybrid

Investment

from $9,500 · fixed scope + travel at cost

Who it's for

ABAP developers with roughly 2–5 years of classic experience; senior developers who never crossed into CDS/RAP get as much from it.

Format

Instructor-led workshop with live coding labs

Pick this one when…

The migration is coming and the team needs modern foundations fast — but you can't release people for a full week.

Outcomes

What the team can do afterwards

  • Developers can explain the 3-tier extensibility model and release contracts — and apply them to real decisions
  • Set-based, push-down SQL replaces loop-and-read habits
  • Modern ABAP idioms (inline declarations, constructor expressions, clean OOP) in active use
  • A first CDS view and a guided walk through a RAP business object, written by each participant
  • A personal 30-day practice plan per developer, mapped to academy modules
Curriculum

The 3 days, day by day

Module codes (M01–M14, B01–B03) reference the Clean Core Academy curriculum — the same backbone available to the team digitally before and after the engagement.

Day 1

Clean Core foundations & the HANA mindset

M01 M02
  • Why 2027 forces the issue — and what 'clean' actually buys you at upgrade time
  • The 3-tier extensibility model: where custom logic is allowed to live now
  • Restricted ABAP and release contracts (C0–C3) — reading them, respecting them
  • The HANA mindset: set-based SQL and code pushdown (doing the work in the database)
  • Lab: spot-the-violation exercises + each developer runs the readiness self-audit
Day 2

Modern ABAP language & SQL performance

M03 M07 M10
  • Inline declarations, constructor expressions, immutable value objects, guard clauses
  • Modern OOP that survives review: small classes, interfaces, dependency-aware design
  • SQL on HANA: N+1 prevention, join strategy, the true cost of COUNT(*) and SELECT *
  • The gotchas catalog: sy-field traps, buffer semantics, dynamic WHERE pitfalls
  • Lab: refactor legacy snippets to modern ABAP with live abaplint checks (an open-source ABAP code checker)
Day 3

CDS, first RAP, and the path forward

M06 M04 M08
  • CDS views (SAP's modern data layer): building, annotating, exposing as OData
  • Guided build: a managed RAP business object end-to-end — data model, behavior, service binding
  • ATC for migration: ABAP_CLOUD_DEVELOPMENT_DEFAULT variants and baselining your backlog
  • Lab: each developer ships a small CDS + RAP exercise, checked live
  • Closing: personal 30-day practice plans mapped to academy modules; team retro with the lead
